Online Induction Program
Flagship professional development for Tribunal members
The Online Induction Program is the flagship training program of the Council of Australasian Tribunals (COAT). It provides practical, expert guidance to help recently appointed members carry out their Tribunal role with confidence and competence.
Participant suitability
This program is designed for recently appointed Tribunal members, including those with specialist expertise and those without legal backgrounds.
Participants are encouraged to have at least six months’ experience as a Tribunal member before commencing the program.
Program overview
The program focuses on the practical skills and knowledge needed to perform effectively as a Tribunal member.
It has been designed and reviewed by a committee of Tribunal experts to ensure it reflects current best practice and real-world experience.
Key content areas include:
- The role of a Tribunal member
- Rules of procedural fairness
- Fact-finding and assessing evidence
- Decision writing and decision making
- Conducting a hearing, including managing self-represented applicants
The program is self-paced but follows a guided schedule led by a team of experienced current and former Tribunal members, who provide feedback and insights throughout.
Participation in online activities is an essential component for certification.
Two live Teams Meet-ups give participants the opportunity to connect with peers, experts, and the COAT Education Consultant.
Program benefits
- Receive practical guidance from experienced Tribunal members
- Engage in collegiate and supportive online discussions
- Access a rich suite of online resources, including videos featuring Tribunal members discussing topics such as decision writing and conducting hearings
- Study anytime, anywhere — on smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop (Mac & PC compatible)
Participant commitment
Participants should expect to devote around five to six hours per week to the program, including reading resources, completing activities, and contributing to online discussions.
Active participation enhances learning and the overall experience for all involved.
Where participants are nominated and funded by their Tribunal, COAT will confirm active participation upon completion of the program.

Participant feedback
“Thank you for such an excellently structured course with highly relevant materials.
The greatest benefit was the experts commenting on participants’ contributions – and the insights from fellow participants themselves. It was all to the point: how to structure a decision, give oral reasons, prepare and conduct a hearing, and deal with experts.”
