The Council of Australasian Tribunals will continue to offer its on-line induction program designed for recently appointed Tribunal members. Please register your EOI online for the next courses in 2025: 24 February – 2 May; 25 August – 24 October, or contact our office at secretariat@coat.asn.au. Note that daily times are for the purpose of the event program and hours spent on the program are at your discretion as long as they meet the requirements.
The course will be led by highly regarded former members of tribunals.
The program offers practical guidance on carrying out the challenging role of Tribunal member.
It is advised that participants have at least 6 months experience in the role of Tribunal member prior to commencing the program.
Content includes :
- the role of a tribunal member
- conducting a hearing, including dealing with self-represented applicants
- fact finding and assessing evidence
- decision writing and decision making
- the rules of procedural fairness.
Program benefits
Participants will be able to:
- participate in online discussions in a collegiate and supportive environment
- obtain practical guidance from experienced Tribunal members
- access online resources, including videos featuring experienced Tribunal members discussing a range of topics, from decision writing to conducting hearings
- access the program when and wherever suits
- access the program via smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computers – both Mac & PC friendly.
Participant commitment
Participants will need to devote at least five to six hour hours per week (please disregard 9am-5pm times in event schedule) to the program: reading resources, responding to module activities and engaging with other participants and the experts by contributing thoughts and ideas to the online forums. The success of this program and the benefits gained are very much dependent on each participant contributing and engaging with others.
Please note it is expected that each participant will contribute to the online activities each week. Where a participant has been nominated, and their program fee paid by their Tribunal, at the conclusion of the program COAT will usually confirm active participation directly to that Tribunal.
There is a maximum of 20 participants per course, so please advise your expression of interest if you wish to be considered in the next intake, or a future course. Please note your preferred course date in your online EOI registration, or contact our office at secretariat@coat.asn.au .
COAT has limited online licenses each month for all our courses. Extending access to programs or re-enrolment without payment, can only occur in exceptional circumstances.
Cost: $595.00 plus 10% GST ($ 654.50 inclusive of GST) to be paid prior to the commencement of the program. Please click here to download the flyer.
Thank you for such an excellently structured course with highly relevant materials The greatest benefit was the experts commenting on participants’ contributions and, very often, from participants themselves. It was all to the point – how to structure a decision and give oral reasons, how to prepare and conduct a hearing, dealing with experts, etc. Participant
