Practical foundations for writing clear, reasoned decisions

The Introduction to Decision Writing program is designed to help Tribunal members strengthen their decision-writing skills through practical, focused learning. This short, intensive online course provides the essential tools and guidance needed to write well-structured, persuasive, and timely decisions.

Participant suitability

The program is primarily intended for Tribunal members with less than two years’ experience, but it is also suitable for more experienced members seeking a refresher in decision writing.

Program overview

Delivered over a three-week period, the program involves a total commitment of approximately six to eight hours.

It is self-paced, allowing participants to engage with materials at times convenient to them, and is accessible via smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer (Mac and PC compatible).

Course Content

Participants will explore:

  • Developing a structure for reasons for decision
  • Identifying issues required under s 43 of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975 (Cth)
  • Articulating reasons for findings of fact and discretionary powers
  • Tips and strategies for writing cogent, persuasive, and timely reasons

Learning resources and activities

Participants will:

  • Access an extensive online library of essential and recommended reading on decision writing and fact-finding
  • View informative videos, including interviews such as Acting Judge Boland with Ms Britton, Deputy President of NCAT and former Chair of COAT, discussing how to give adequate reasons
  • Complete interactive exercises, such as identifying factual issues in case studies and discussing responses with other participants
  • Have the option to submit an extract of a decision for detailed, confidential feedback (via phone or email) from an experienced judicial officer

  • 20 April – 8 May
  • 13 July – 31 July
  • 14 September – 2 October

Each intake is limited to 20 participants.

Cost and registration

Cost: $495 + 10% GST ($544.50 inclusive), payable prior to commencement.
